Dutch Public Prosecutor investigates ibogaine

The Dutch Public Prosecuter (OM) leads a criminal investigation on a Dutch home where addiction treatments with thesubstanceibogaine are offered.

Reason for the study was a fatal accident on the highroad A2 on 18 March this year, where a man was hit by a truck. Investigations found that the man had been treated with the substance ibogaine.

This material comes from an African plant and affects several neurotransmitters. This would have an effect on addiction. But the use of ibogaine can give dangerous side effects such as hallucinations and cardiac arrhythmias. In many countries the substance on the list of banned substances, in the Netherlands this is not the case.

After the fatal accident, the investigation started in the house where the treatments were carried out and two therapists were identified as suspects. The study focuses not only on the truth, but also possibly stopping the treatment. The Health Inspectorate is an investigation.

On August 25 a new incident has occurred. A person who had been treated with ibogaine, was admitted to a hospital in Amsterdam. This OM Utrecht feels compelled to warn about the potential risks of treatment with the substance ibogaine. It is for this reason that the OM has decided to publicize the ongoing investigation.
